Earlier this month Kerry Flynn from mashable unravelled the mystery revolving around the black market for Instagram verifications. A long lasting myth that has been treated by insiders as an open secret and which probably has not caused any surprises amongst those who desire Instagram’s most precious feature.
Flynn wrote: “The fee is anywhere from a bottle of wine to $15,000, according to a dozen sources who have sold verification, bought verification for someone else, or directly know someone who has done one or the other.“
But for those of you who aren’t in the picture, we are talking about the little blue check that appears next to the handle on your Instagram profile. In December 2014 Kevin Systrom CEO and Co-Founder of Instagram published a statement that the social network would introduce a verification badge, similar to the one known on Facebook or Twitter.
Who is it for
As the social network hit the 300 million active user benchmark, the need for verification became a necessity: “Today, we’re excited to announce verified badges for celebrities, athletes and brands, making it easier for you to connect with the authentic accounts you’re looking for.”
Brands and Influencers that desire this exclusive feature have no chances of applying let alone buying it. Some might say, so why bother? It’s only a symbol of status! Nevertheless, almost three years have passed since Instagram launched the verified badge and the social network has rapidly grown, counting approximately 700 million active users worldwide.
How to get verification on Instagram
Where numbers have more than doubled in less than three years and social media marketing has reached a whole new level, the urge to be verified on Instagram is becoming more and more relevant. It is understandable that brands and influencers are prepared to pay up to several thousand dollars to get their accounts verified.
But how can I get the verification badge? It’s not like on Facebook or Twitter where literally anyone can apply for verification – this is a right that is exclusively reserved for Instagram. So if you are not Instagram’s agenda, you will need a middleman that has some employee inside Instagram who can fill out the verification form. Flynn writes that this process can take up to six weeks. But if you’re lucky, the form will be passed on and you’re in the inner circle of those in possession of the little blue check.
